Okay, I'm totally going to sound like my friend Julie by writing this post. Here is a quick lesson on when and when not to use an apostrophe in your last name.

Incorrect:

Dear Friend,

Thank you for the cookies.

Love,

The Cochran's

Correct:

Dear Friend,

Thank you for the cookies.

Love,

The Cochrans

When you are using an apostrophe in this way, you are WRONG and you need to refresh your English skills. An apostrophe is used to show possession. You are not talking about something that belongs to the Cochrans, or whoever. You are just talking about your family. So if you do this, please stop now. I'm saving you from the embarrassment of looking unintelligent.

Here is how you would use an apostrophe:

That is Kathryn Cochran's car.

That is the Cochrans' (the whole family) car.
